My name is Catherine Dickson and I'm a Women's Holistic Health Coach & Certified Personal Trainer living in Seattle, Washington, by way of Louisiana!
Although my route to Health Coaching has certainly been unique, the journey was a better teacher than any of the multiple degrees and certifications I've earned, and without it, I don't think I would be the woman I am today!
It all started back in 2013 when I packed up my life in Louisiana, leaving behind a budding career in the family business, a beautiful home, and all of my family and friends, in order to move to Seattle, a place I had been one time... I didn't know a soul or have a job lined up, but I knew deep in my bones that I'd figure it out. I was a resourceful lady and confident there was more to life than the way I’d been living it.
THERE HAD TO BE!
You see, I had been fiercely struggling with Binge Eating Disorder and Bulimia since I was 16 and as a result, I was morbidly obese, severely depressed, at war with my body, constantly on the dieting roller coaster, experiencing chronic fatigue and pain everywhere all the time, and had ZERO self-esteem or self-worth. I desperately wanted and needed to reinvent myself and get out of my own head and way, so that I could finally cultivate the life I always dreamed of!
Upon moving to Seattle, I met a new friend who worked as a Personal Trainer at a well-renowned, local health club. Fortunately, I decided I was in the market for a trainer and with her unwavering support and friendship, I lost 130 lbs. over the next year and a half through diet and exercise alone. It was a beautiful, overwhelming, exhausting, and incredibly empowering experience! I had finally found a way to reclaim my life and was actually LIVING IT, versus just existing.
Although I hated exercise up to this point, I fell in love with strength training and loved how good it felt to feel strong, powerful, and capable for the first time in my life! I had been the Queen of Limiting Beliefs, and feeling empowered through strength training ended up translating into all other areas of my life as well. It was so incredibly freeing!
After keeping my weight off for nearly a year, I decided to have two Bariatric plastic surgeries to remove the copious amounts excess skin my weight loss had left behind. They were brutal and came with a multitude of unforeseen side-effects, but I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. For me, it was the final puzzle piece I needed in order to really "turn the page" and move on with my life. I felt like a new woman on the inside and wanted to feel that way on the outside as well!
Going through such an incredibly powerful transition in life solidified my passion for helping others and I knew I needed to make a career change. I originally graduated with a Marketing Degree and had been working in Commercial Real Estate for seven years, highly unfulfilled and constantly stressed out. Although I knew a transition into the Health & Wellness world wouldn't be easy, I also couldn't imagine experiencing and overcoming everything that I did, without pursuing a life of service to others who were struggling in a same or similar boat.
OUR PAIN IS OFTEN OUR PURPOSE...
Therefore my first stop was pursuing a second Bachelor's Degree in Sport & Exercise Science at Seattle University. Being the "older" lady in the class was certainly a unique experience, but I took my newfound knowledge and confidence in understanding the body and how it moves to ultimately pursue my dream job at the time. Becoming an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and getting a job at the gym where I lost all of my own weight was so satisfying and exciting!
Shortly after starting, I became the go-to trainer for clients needing a little extra TLC. Whether they were in wheelchairs, recovering from surgeries, dealing with chronic pain or complex musculoskeletal and metabolic conditions, or looking to lose significant amounts of weight, I found that my favorite part of all was in learning about their lives... Finding ways in which to create real, lasting change in their routines, helping them rediscover their passions, and building them up so that they felt loved, empowered, and capable was such an incredible experience!
However, it eventually dawned on me that being a full-time Personal Trainer wasn't enough anymore, as I wanted to be able to reach my clients on an even deeper level. So I enrolled in a Health Coaching certification program with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, and am so thankful I did! Now as a Holistic Health Coach & Certified Personal Trainer, I get to work with my clients on all aspects of their health and wellness, as a coach, mentor, confidante, reference guide and a fun workout buddy!
My mission now is to help women find their spark again, stop chasing perfection, heal their relationship with food and their body, find movement they actually enjoy, and cultivate the self-awareness and love to implement REAL CHANGE in their lives. I want to show women how to feel empowered in their health and wellness journey, versus a victim of their circumstances, history, and limiting beliefs. I firmly believe we are all capable of rising up, being bold, asking for what we want, following our dreams, and living a full and happy life!
